Running up a down escalator was the ultimate test as a kid. Even as an adult I'll see an empty escalator and get the itch to sprint to the top. In Jr. High, my friends and I once got kicked out of a Dick's sporting goods for testing our scrawny pre-teen chicken legs on the never ending loop of stairs. Which is what I like to think this trailblazer rat is doing. This pioneer of the concrete frontier is fully aware that he's going up a down escalator, and the odds are stacked against him. But, he wants to do something few if any rats have ever done, summit the subway escalator.
Rats are all over New York, and everyone wants them gone. The city has even gone far enough to hire a woman with the title of Rat Czar whose Stalinesque objective is to eliminate all rats. You start one bubonic plague 700 years ago, and no lets you forget. People are absolutely disgusted with the video that came out a few weeks ago of dozens of rats running out from under a homeless guys blanket on the subway, but I think this is kind of wholesome. It's freezing outside and these guys are all just huddled together vibing to stay warm. Nothing wrong with that.
Is there a strong chance these rats are under this blanket, gnawing at this homeless guys face for sustenance? Yes, but still not the most disturbing video I've watched about NYC. I will never ride an escalator again without thinking of this completely unhinged NYC fact video from Klemmer that gets real gruesome, real quick ... "This escalator was made in 1920 ... a 4 year old child lost a finger on this comb plate!"
Hopefully when this NYC rat gave in to exhaustion, he didn't get severed in half by the escalator comb.
